Your dulcimer or dulcimer kit can come with a preinstalled "six and a half" fret. This adds a single sharp to the scale between the 6th and 7th fret (corresponding to adding an F# to a white key C scale on the piano) . We recommend the extra fret for musicians and most adult players, because it adds versatility and makes it easier to play your dulcimer with other instruments without retuning.
For novice musicians and children with little musical experience, and for those who prefer the traditional simplicity of an all white key (diatonic) scale, we recommend leaving the "extra fret" for your second dulcimer purchase. Most dulcimers we sell to schools have no extra fret.
